What is a Breeding Manager?
A Thoroughbred Breeding Manager is a senior, specialized role on a stud farm, responsible specifically for the planning, coordination, and execution of the breeding program.
Some of the key responsibilities of a Breeding Manager include:
- Breeding Program Management
- Foaling and Youngstock Care
- Health & Veterinary Oversight
- Staff Supervision
- Farm Operations
- Business & Client Relations
While the Stud Manager oversees the entire farm operation (staff, pasture, foaling, sales, etc.), the Breeding Manager focuses more narrowly on reproductive management and ensuring mares conceive, carry, and deliver healthy foals.
Steps to becoming a Breeding Manager
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to follow instructions and report back
- In depth knowledge of horse care and welfare
- Excellent record keeping skills
- Competent handling horses including stallions and young stock
- Great organisational skills
- Sound knowledge of the breeding industry
- Prior experience
- Passion for working with horses
- NZ Certificate in Equine Breeding (Level 3/4) – or willingness to work towards these

NZEET, a private industry-owned establishment, offers the New Zealand Equine Breeding Courses, commencing from a 13-month certificate, up to a professional apprenticeship.
