Clerk of the Course

What is a Clerk of the Course?

A Clerk of the Course is a highly experienced mounted official responsible for the safety, coordination, and management of horses and riders on raceday — particularly on the track itself. They ride a horse (usually a calm, well-trained "lead pony") and are seen in uniform assisting jockeys and racehorses before and after each race.

Some of the key responsibilities of a Clerk of the Course include:

  • Track Safety and Supervision
  • Lead-Out and Catching Horses
  • Communication and Coordination

A Clerk of the Course is a mounted raceday official who ensures track safety, assists with horse control, and supports race operations.

They're critical for on-track coordination and are often the unseen heroes when something goes wrong on the turf.
