What is a Foaling Manager?
A Thoroughbred Foaling Manager is a specialized professional on a stud farm responsible for overseeing and assisting the birth (foaling) of Thoroughbred racehorses. This role is critical during the breeding season, when mares are delivering foals—often at night and sometimes with complications.

Steps to becoming a Foaling Manager
- Good communication skills
- Ability to follow instructions and report back
- In depth knowledge of horse care and welfare
- Good record keeping skills
- Competent at handling horses, including young horses
- Conscious of health and safety
- Great organisational skills
- Flexibility of hours e.g. foal/night watch
- Prior experience and a willingness to learn on job
- NZ Certificate in Equine Breeding (Level 3/4) – or willingness to work towards these
