Jumps Jockey

What is a Jumps Jockey?

A Thoroughbred racing jumps jockey is a professional rider who specializes in jump racing, also known as National Hunt racing. This form of racing involves horses jumping over obstacles, such as hurdles or steeplechase fences, during the race.

Some of the key responsibilities of a Jumps Jockey include:

  • Riding in races
  • Understanding race strategy
  • Trackwork riding
  • Fitness & weight management
  • Communication

A Thoroughbred horse jumps jockey is a highly skilled rider and athlete who plays a pivotal role in a horse’s racing success. Jockeys combine athleticism, strategy, and horsemanship to guide horses to victory—often under intense physical and competitive pressure.

They’re the face of the performance, but also an integral part of the behind-the-scenes preparation.

Shaun Fannin

Shaun Fannin is a name synonymous with New Zealand jumps racing, and at just 29 years of age, he already has multiple premiership titles, Grand Nationals and Great Northern crowns to his credit.

We caught up with Shaun earlier in the season, where he shared insights into his introduction to the sport, his first ride, and that elusive first winner. As we saw last Saturday at Trentham, he's still a force to be reckoned with in the saddle, and now, in the training ranks!
