What is a Strapper?

A strapper is a person responsible for the hands-on daily care of racehorses in a stable. In New Zealand and Australia, the term "strapper" is commonly used, while in other countries (like the UK and US), similar roles are called grooms.

 

Some of the key responsibilities of a Strapper include:

  • Horse care
  • Handling horses
  • Raceday preparation 
  • Stable maintenance 

Strappers play a vital behind-the-scenes role. They form close bonds with the horses and are often the ones who know each horse’s personality and quirks best.

 

A good strapper is essential to a happy, healthy, and race-ready horse.

Steps to becoming a Strapper

  • Stable Assistant Licence
  • International Licence Stable Assistant
  • Level 2 Certificate Introduction to Equine Skills

  • Employed on Raceday by a Licensed Trainer
  • Willing to enrol in and complete Level 3 Certifcate in Equine Skills Thoroughbred Raceday Strapper
  • Willing to participate in Continuing Professional Development
  • A passion for horses
  • Physically competent to carry out all tasks
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Horsemanship skills
