What is a Stud Manager?

A Thoroughbred Stud Manager is responsible for the overall operation and management of a horse breeding farm (stud farm), where Thoroughbred horses are bred for racing.

 

Some of the key responsibilities of a Stud Manager include:

  • Breeding Program Management
  • Foaling and Youngstock Care
  • Health & Veterinary Oversight
  • Staff Supervision
  • Farm Operations
  • Business & Client Relations

This is a senior leadership role that combines animal husbandry expertise, business acumen, and people management skills.

Steps to becoming a Stud Manager

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good decision-making skills
  • Ability to organise a team of staff and barns
  • Prior experience in all aspects of breeding necessary
  • Sound knowledge of horse care and welfare
  • In depth knowledge of breeding industry
  • Interest in keeping up to date with breeding and racing both nationally and internationally
  • Knowledge of pasture management and ground maintenance

  • NZ Certificate in Equine Breeding (Level 3/4) – or willingness to work towards these
  • Scholarships e.g. Sunline Educational Trust Bachelor of Agricultural Science Degree

The Gateway programme introduces subjects outside of the general school curriculum, including trades, social work and agriculture. NZEET, a private industry-owned establishment, offers the New Zealand Equine Breeding Courses, commencing from a 13-month certificate, up to a professional apprenticeship.
