RACING INTEGRITY BOARD

RIB

Assistant Racing Steward

  • Part time, at least 2 days a week
  • Fast paced and exciting environment with lots of variety
  • A chance to make a difference where doing the right thing matters.

Be part of a team that puts animal welfare at the heart of what we do, while ensuring the integrity of racing is maintained at the highest level

You’ll play an important role helping protect the integrity of New Zealand’s racing industry by providing direction, advice and support to thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing codes, along with racing participants.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic self-starter to assist our racing stewards at the Racing Integrity Board (RIB). These opportunities don’t come up often within our committed team, so this is a great opportunity to get into this exciting industry on the ground floor.

You’ll be out and about across the Canterbury region attending race meetings, visiting kennels and stables, along with some time working from home.

This position plays a key role in animal welfare, both on a race day and supporting our animal welfare team.

What you’ll be doing
As an assistant racing steward, you’ll support experienced stewards and others in the RIB team, with a focus on outside stewarding duties.

The things you do include:

  • Learning the relevant Rules of Racing to working outside on race day
  • Accurately identifying animals before they start racing by checking a brand or microchip
  • Checking the correct gear is being worn by an animal
  • Building relationships and communicating with participants on race day
  • Assisting with race day, racing trials along with stable and kennel audits to check compliance with animal welfare and other industry standards.

About this role
This is a part time role of at least two days a week.

It’s not a ‘nine-to-five’ job. You’ll work at least a 32-hour fortnight, including some evenings and weekends.

At times you will travel to some of the more remote parts of New Zealand.

About you
You don’t need experience in the racing industry to become an assistant steward, although you will need to be comfortable working with animals. The RIB looks for people who:

  • Have high levels of integrity, honesty and discretion
  • Good at communicating and building relationships
  • Have an eye for detail
  • Work well under pressure and can think on their feet
  • Enjoy working in a team environment, and
  • Have a working knowledge of computer technologies.

If you like variety, a fast paced and constantly changing environment, in a region which boasts an energetic revitalised city centre surrounded by the tranquillity of nature, then we want to hear from you.

Location: Canterbury
