Meet Hyeontaek Oh

Originally from South Korea, Hyeontaek’s journey to becoming an Apprentice Jockey has been one of determination and perseverance. After finishing high school, he set his sights on a career in the saddle when friends suggested his small stature could make him well suited to becoming a jockey. He was accepted into the Korea Racing Authority’s Horse Racing Academy, but an injury temporarily halted his ambitions and later left him unable to meet the required weight restrictions.

Determined not to give up on his goal, Hyeontaek headed to Australia to gain further experience before returning to South Korea to complete his mandatory military service. During this time, he began exploring opportunities to pursue a riding career overseas and eventually set his sights on New Zealand as the place to continue his journey.
