NZC Introduction into Equine Skills

The Level 2 Introduction to Equine Skills course is free to all Thoroughbred racing industry participants who are currently employed with a licensed trainer and is designed to upskill people who are just starting off in the industry or who want to further their knowledge base. We also offer Level 3 and Level 4 courses for Stable hand’s, Track riders and Apprentice Jockeys.

The course has a 6-month duration in which you must complete all your work. It is practically based, however you are required to capture evidence of competency in a work diaries with supporting comments from your workplace verifier. An Industry assessor will support you through your learning journey by making visits to the workplace, collecting and marking your work.

The topics that make up the level 2 course are as follows:

  • Identify signs of good and ill health in horses.
  • Apply skills for employment in an Equine workplace.
  • Provide routine care for horses in stables and/or yards under close supervision.
  • Prepare horses for travel and load and unload under close supervision.
  • Care for a group of horses in a paddock and maintain paddocks under close supervision.
  • Carry out routine, minor or temporary maintenance of equine facilities under close supervision.
  • Prepare Thoroughbred racehorse for exercise and provide after care

Please note to undertake the course free of fees you must be working in the industry and not currently undertaking any other study or attending school. If you are still at school, please let us know as we also offer some equine units through the gateway programme.
