Position Title: Race Stable Assistant
Location: West Plains, Southland
Reports To: Stable Manager
Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated Race Stable Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a background in equine care, excellent organizational skills, initiative and the ability to work independently. This role involves daily stable operations, support with track work, ensuring the well-being of horses, and maintaining a clean and safe environment.

What you would experience:
- Work with thoroughbreds from weaning to racing right through to retirement, in a new racing facility which uses varied forms of training systems based on the needs presented.
- Develop skills in horsemanship including a knowledge of nutrition and holistic approach to horse wellbeing.
- Work with young horses through to retired race horses and retirees with race track, beach work, treadmill, arena and round pen.
Key Responsibilities:
- Horse Care: Provide high-quality care for all horses, including feeding, grooming, exercising, and monitoring their health.
- Stable Maintenance: Ensure stables, and surrounding areas are clean, organized, and well-maintained.
- Health Monitoring: Regularly check horses for signs of illness or injury and administer basic first aid as needed. Coordinate with stable manager and veterinarians for more serious health issues.
- Record Keeping: Ensure maintenance of accurate records of horse health, feeding schedules, and any treatments administered.
- Equipment Management: Ensure all stable equipment is in good working order and properly stored. Report any repairs or replacements needed.
- Race Event Preparation: Assist in preparing horses and facilities for races and events and attend if required.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Experience with horses in a stable or equine care environment.
- Skills: Strong knowledge of horse care and stable management. Excellent communication and organisation skills.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Certifications: Relevant qualifications in equine care or stable management are a plus. NZTR licensing are not necessary, appropriate licenses will be achieved if successful in this role.
- Personal Attributes: Hard working, reliable, responsible, and passionate about horses and animal care. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
