Meet Tom Wigram

With a childhood spent showjumping ponies, Tom Wigram was always happiest in the saddle. When a family friend introduced him to Ruakaka-based trainer Kenny Rae, Tom began learning to ride trackwork and soon realised he wanted to pursue a career as a jockey.

An avid competitor in the LOVERACING.NZ Pony Scurry Series, Tom continued gaining experience in the racing industry, spending his school holidays riding trackwork for Shaun Phelan before later joining the stable of Byerley Park trainer Donna Logan to begin his apprenticeship.

Tom made an immediate impression when he began race riding in June 2026, securing his first winner aboard Bridie at New Plymouth in just his third raceday ride. He has continued to build momentum during his first season in the saddle and was recognised with the Toby Autridge Trophy for Most Promising First Year Apprentice at the 2026 Northern Apprentice Jockey Awards.
