Waikato Thoroughbred Racing (WTR) is seeking applications for Board Directors to help guide the Club through an exciting period of transformation, including the Greenfields project – a major infrastructure development for the future of racing in the region. 

About the Role
This role is a voluntary, unpaid governance role.  Directors provide governance and strategic oversight, ensuring WTR operates in line with its Constitution, legislative requirements, and the Rules of Racing. The Board’s responsibilities include setting strategic direction, monitoring performance, ensuring compliance, overseeing financial sustainability, and promoting the growth of thoroughbred racing in the Waikato. 

What We’re Looking For
We are interested in candidates with governance experience and expertise in areas such as finance, law, property development, asset management, or stakeholder engagement. Knowledge of the racing industry is an advantage, but not essential. Integrity, collaboration, and strong strategic thinking are key attributes.

Commitment

  • Approx. 8–10 Board meetings per year, plus AGM.
  • Participation in subcommittees/working groups as required.
  • Attendance at major race meetings and Club events.
  • Initial term up to 3 years, renewable.
  • Voluntary role, reasonable expenses reimbursed.

Eligibility

  • Must not be disqualified under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 or Companies Act 1993.
  • All candidates must be assessed and recommended by the Director Assessment Panel before election/appointment.
  • At least four directors must be Club members; up to three may be non-members.
